Westville Correctional Facility was our next reminder of God answering our prayers in ways beyond our imagination.  We were somewhat apprehensive about this program because of reports we had heard about some really stiff security and some general tiredness and lack of inspiration.  Loyal challenged us in prep time to ask God to do big things and so we spent considerable time in prayer asking just that even though we had no idea what He was about to do.  Our first prayer to be answered was the security concern.  It took some time to get everyone through and the process was fairly chaotic, but everyone made it through.  Shane had told us that they would not allow us in if we did not pass the metal detector, but even though it went off when Hannah went through, she was eventually allowed to go on in. The next answered prayers were a nice acoustical gym to sing in and a small, but very attentive audience.  At first we were somewhat disappointed to see only 26 men (the staff explained that there were some political issues that kept more of the men from coming out), but it didn’t take long to see that there were some very genuine Christians in this group.  The tone for the service was set when one of the men opened with a very real prayer and the rest of the program was simply amazing!  The men were enthusiastic, but in a calm and reverent way, and it felt like a very safe environment.  Those two hours just flew by!  Many people commented on how worshipful the program was, the response from the audience was so encouraging for us and God moved in such a powerful way.  One other neat side note:  at our last prison program one of the raucous songs the prisoners sang was “I Give Myself Away”, so we were really blessed when they started playing it softly over the speakers at the end of the program while we were talking with the men as they left.  It felt so holy then in comparison to the first time, and was a very fitting end to an incredible worship experience.  The parting with the men was sad, but also much more hopeful because of their commitment, we knew this wouldn’t be the last time we would see them.  After we got out, everyone was stoked!  We invaded several local restaurants and eventually got rid of our excess energy.  At the hotel, some slept and some hung out for a little while.

We started our day on the bus with a call time of 8:45.  We also set a new count record with an amazing morning time of 12.04!  It was another pleasant day on the bus.  Aaron and Jared went around interviewing people and videoing them.  Somehow some of us broke into a rendition of “Living On Free Food Tickets”, and then that led to more singing of songs of that style and caliber.  For our restroom break, we had three gas stations, but only about one and a half restrooms.  Unfortunately, that contributed to a 17 minute stop.  After that stop, a rather fascinating discussion commenced in the middle of the bus, made wiser by the kind counsel of Julian and Bertha. After a hilarious stop at Denny’s (BYOB – Bring Your Own Blanket Day) in which James entertained us and the rest of the establishment, the rest of the day was spent dozing, eating, and talking with occasional bursts of happy laughter.  All in all it was another lovely day on the bus!

  2. Yeah, way to be really vague about all the “fascinating discussions”.
